Week 16: Canadian Thanksgiving and Football

Two of my favourite things about Canada are: our early Thanksgiving and our brand of football. Together, they make this weekend the most delicious and exciting time of Autumn! Get yer turkey and pigskin cause this weekend is going to be fantastic!

Last week brought a couple of upsets to the AAFC S-Club CFL Pool and the results are as follows:

Game 1: BC 24-20 over Toronto. (Points: Everyone - meaning KDS, Jamie and Myself)
Game 2: Sask 37-34 over Calgary. (Points: Me!)
Game 3: Hamilton 44-38 over Montreal. (Points: No one)
Game 4: Edmonton 36-22 over Winnipeg. (Points: No one)

Remember, to make your picks. If it helps, do them right before kickoff of the first game. If you can't make it, text me and I'll put them in when I'm at my computer. Either way, the more the merrier, eh?

This week is, of course, Thanksgiving weekend. And nothing goes better with Turkey and all the trimmings than heaps of touchdowns smothered in QB sacks for your favourite team.

Week 16 will end the tie for first place in the West and possibly create a 3-way tie for second. In the East, Toronto can still, mathematically, place second and host a playoff game. Winnipeg can finish 9-9 at best and Toronto can finish 8-10 at best. Unless Edmonton doesn't win anymore games and Toronto wins everyone of their games - Edmonton (or any other Western team) will cross over. Hamiton is mathematically out of it but Toronto isn't. Winnipeg could, mathematically, be kicked out of the playoffs if they don't win all of their remaining games and pray for the losses of Edmonton and 1 other Western team.

With that in mind, if I'm correct, here's the setting for all the Thanksgiving weekend action!

Game 1: Toronto at Winnipeg, Friday 7:30pm ET. Toronto put up a pretty good fight against the Lions last week and Winnipeg, although scoring early, played a bad second half to lose to the Eskimos. That being said, Toronto lost at home and Winnipeg lost in Edmonton. Advantage went to home-teams (sort of) in their previous contests so I'd give the edge to Winnipeg with, what should be, a sold-out CanadInns cheering for the Blue and Gold. Joseph didn't look that great and will probably get the start. Meanwhile, Glenn just had a hiccup last week and he should be in better form on Friday. Winnipeg wins.

Game 2: Edmonton at BC, Friday 10:30 ET. Edmonton winning a gritty game at home is different than Edmonton winning away from their turf - and especially at BC Place where the Lions are 5-2. However, BC is the only team in the West to have a losing record against division rivals. Edmonton played an alright game last week but, like I said earlier, Winnipeg's second half was pretty poor. BC can make halftime adjustments and have done so in order to get back to a respectable place in the standings. While Edmonton winning would be good for the Riders, I don't think that they'll be able to do it away from home. BC is on a roll and they're sights are on 1st place in the West. BC wins (prove me wrong!).

Game 3: Hamilton at Montreal, Thanksgiving Day 1pm ET. Is Quinton Porter for real? Or did he pull a Dinwiddie last week and surprise everybody? The TSN CFL analysts don't think so, but I'm not convinced. He played an excellent game at home against a good Montreal team, but then again, Hamilton had to win sometime and Montreal had to lose sometime. I should have seen the upset as inevitable. Hamilton will maybe go 4-14 this season but that will take beating either Montreal this week - in Montreal, Saskatchewan in Regina, Calgary at home or Winnipeg in Winnipeg. It's a tough uphill battle. Right now, those guys are playing for positions on next year's roster so it isn't like they have nothing to lose. Montreal will be ready to avenge their embarrassing loss and Cavillo will be ready to do it. Montreal wins.

Game 4: Saskatchewan at Calgary, Thanksgiving Day 4:30pm ET. Saskatchewan played an insane first half and the defense won it in the end, making crucial second-half adjustments and limiting Henry Burris' ability to throw the deep ball. Field position was key and the Riders won it in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. Whoever turns the ball over the least will win this rematch. I'm confidant that Saskatchewan can go into McMahon Stadium and put up 30 points. Why? Cause we all know that when the Roughriders play in Calgary it's a home-away-from-home game. Last week before the Rider win, there were less than 1,000 tickets available for the rematch, and who doesn't think that those 1,000 available tickets were not scooped up by drunken Rider fans half an hour after their win? It'll be green in Calgary and it'll be loud for the Riders. Burris needs to get points on the board early and his defense needs to stop the air attack and deep threat presented by Dressler and Bagg. Cates should be back and if all goes well in practice over the weekend, so will Flick. Saskatchewan wins.

The TSN Power Rankings for Thanksgiving weekend show BC jumping to first place over all with Calgary, Montreal and Winnipeg falling from grace. Saskatchewan stays in 4th place, although, this time they're all alone.
  1. B.C. (Last Week: 3)
  2. Montreal (Last Week: 1)
  3. Calgary (Last Week: 2)
  4. Saskatchewan (Last Week: T4)
  5. Edmonton (Last Week: 6)
  6. Winnipeg (Last Week: T4)
  7. Hamilton (Last Week: 7)
  8. Toronto (Last Week: 8)
Chris Schultz likes: Winnipeg, BC, Montreal Calgary.

Remember! Get your picks in - each and every one of you!

Good luck. God speed.
